Josef Suk

1874 – 1935

An important Czech composer and violinist Josef Suk had his music education at the Prague Conservatory. One of his teachers was Antonin Dvorak. Josef Suk was the founder of the famous Czech Quartet performing all over the world. In 1922, Suk became professor of the Prague Conservatory. Bohuslav Martinu and Rudolf Firkusny were among his students. Suk’s early compositions exhibit the influence of Brahms and Dvorak. Suk’s later works are written in a more complex style. In 1932, Josef Suk won the Silver Medal at the Olympic Games Art Competition for his composition Into a New Life.
